A Prediction Market Trader Made $436,000 on Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolรกs Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.
Market Movement in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," said an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Grows
Politicians are starting to take note.
A bill put forward on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to political events.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
A company executive for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
