The Global Health Body Sounds Concern Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Medications
Fewer than a tenth of individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its initial guidance on the therapies.
With over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable availability to GLP-1 medication.
According to forecasts, over two billion will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.
"The latest guidance recognises that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with holistic and lifelong care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are significant obstacles to widespread availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, explains the body.
GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis
Even in the current most favorable case, the production of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people โ under 10% of the global need, according to the health organization.
The guideline calls on governments and firms to expand availability, via strategies such as voluntary licensing.
A patent on the active ingredient โ the core component of a leading brand โ is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.
The Way Obesity Drugs Work
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and boost the sense of being full so people reduce food intake.
Patients typically begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.
Studies indicates patients may regain a significant portion a year later of halting the drug, when their typical hunger resume.
Being carrying excess weight raises your risk for experiencing diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some cancers.
Excess weight concerns people in every country and was linked to 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
