The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
