In a move that combines financial support with a firm ultimatum, Washington has committed $2 billion for UN emergency relief operations. However, this funding was accompanied by a direct warning for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Announcement During Broader Funding Cuts
The pledge was declared amid significant cuts in American funding for humanitarian operations. Further cuts are also anticipated from other key donors such as the UK and Germany. The US representative, a senior Trump administration figure, delivered the statement together with the United Nations' top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will save countless lives," said the UN's humanitarian chief. Yet, this sum represents just a small portion of the United States' traditional contributions, which were estimated at around $17 billion in the recent past.
